On Christmas Day, Derrick was asked to assist with a difficult IV on a nursing unit. The patient had been admitted the day before and the patient's husband was with her. He did not have any transportation because he came to our hospital by ambulance from Alabama. While trying to start the IV, Derrick talked with the patient and her husband. He was asked where the closest McDonald's was and learned that all the patient wanted for Christmas was a piece of apple pie from McDonald's. Derrick realized that her husband was going to walk to McDonald's and told the patient and her husband that he would take care of this Christmas wish. After work he went to McDonald's and found them closed. He still got her apple pie at Waffle House and brought it to the patient. And, he was able to start her IV!
