Des was nominated by a patient's relative following the extraordinary and compassionate care their mother received. The patient was admitted to St. Mel's ward via ED after arriving by ambulance, having a history of suffering seizures. The patient was very nervous after having had bad experiences in another hospital previously. Des comforted the patient and went "that extra mile" to reassure the patient and relatives who attended with her. Des took the time to explain to the patient why she was in the hospital and what care plan was being put in place for her. The patient's relatives remarked how Des "was a dream to deal with" at such a vulnerable and frightening time.
