After several hours in the emergency room, our mother was admitted to the hospital. With everything going as well as can be expected, she met the staff on duty, had supper, and visited her sister on the phone. Toward the end of the visit, she became very uncomfortable, and her heart rate and blood pressure became very erratic. Our day shift nurse, whose shift was just over, returned to Mom’s room. She was very aware that the hospital was busy, and the nurses were attending to other patients. She stayed for hours attending to Mom, working the pm shift, and staying with her until after a CAT scan gave us some answers. The last we saw of her that night was fifteen minutes before 11, when we said good night and thanked her for giving us her time until Mom was resting comfortably. The next day, she took no credit for this, telling us that all nurses on staff would have provided the same care. She simply knew how many patients had needs and said there was no reason she couldn’t stay. We are forever grateful that she could be there for Mom and all of us.
