My father came to 4 South from the Emergency Room experiencing extreme pain in his adrenal glands. Over the next few days, CT scans found masses in his lung and adrenal glands. There was a definite lack of communication from a specialist outside of the hospital that caused some real confusion for me and my dad for a while. I met with Devin Nicholas, and instantly she formulated a plan to meet the supervisor and hospital doctor to find a solution. At the time, I was very upset (I have PTSD), and Devin’s concern for our issues was so evident by her actions. She calmed my dad and me before and after we met with the doctor. I could see and feel the compassion she holds for her patients. Devin’s professionalism and dedication is exactly why we continue to use Mary Washington Hospital. This situation was so difficult for us, especially with dad having possible cancer. We both are Army veterans and have seen a lot in our lives, but this event with cancer is so difficult. Devin’s empathy and ability to comfort us is more than worthy of just praise. Please know that at the time she was comforting us, my heart felt like it was bleeding. Devin helped calm both of us with her actions and words. Anyone that employs this wonderful human being will always have a seriously dedicated and loyal employee. It is this type of kindness that sets the bar for all nurses to strive for. Please accept this nomination from my heart for the DAISY Award for Devin Nicholas.

Thank you, Devin, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
