Those who cannot afford the essential medical treatments are not denied treatment at Decatur Morgan Hospital regardless of their ability to pay. We often hear accounts of staff members going to considerable lengths to ensure that our patients' most fundamental needs are fulfilled. Our Dialysis staff is not an exception to this rule. Four patients who do not have health insurance and who, as a result, would not be able to afford dialysis treatment are cared for by the DMH dialysis team each week. This group has invested the time necessary to go deeper and get to know the individuals whom they are responsible for caring for on multiple days each week. Whether they realize it or not, they impacted these entire families with the love they have shown. Here are just a few examples:

On multiple occasions, groceries have been bought to help get these patients taken care of.

This team celebrated the birth of one of their patient's children. Diapers and infant formula have been provided while the dad battles to find a job compatible with his dialysis schedule.

When one of the nurses had to give a patient an infusion of three liters of fluid instead of doing dialysis, she became alarmed. Normally, dialysis patients require excess fluid removal. She realized that something more needed to be done to assist this patient with access to food. And she and her team set out to address this issue.

This team also identified some of their needs and linked them to local services such as The Decatur Dream Center and Meals on Wheels. In case some are not familiar with it, The Decatur Dream Center is a local ministry of Calvary Assembly, a free resource set up to address immediate and long-term needs such as hunger and poverty.

The Dialysis Team has truly shown what it means to love others and be passionate about what they are called to do. This is not just a job for these ladies, and it shows. They are a true DAISY Team!
