An 18 year old patient was upgraded to her unit with a diagnosis of pyelonephritis and dehydration. Diana's assessment uncovered more information which she took back to the physician. The physician questioned the accuracy of the information but sent a resident to reevaluate the patient. Diana continued with her quest to insure a favorable outcome for the patient and offered suggestions for the resident who eventually pursued the testing. The findings revealed Diana's hunch was correct in that the patient was found to have bacterial meningitis. Diana's persistence, diligence and great assessment skills proved invaluable for this young patient. Diana also stayed an extra 5.5 hours after her shift to care for the patient. This story confirms the realizaation of the impact nurses play on our paients' outcomes and ultimately their lives.
