Diane Dipierro was nominated to receive the DAISY award by the spouse of one of her patients. The patient expressed satisfaction with all the nurses in the Oncology department where his wife receives chemotherapy. However, Diane was seen as the one that "goes above and beyond."
Before each chemotherapy session blood work would have to be drawn in a separate blood drawing room, where Diane alternated with her co-workers. His wife is a cancer patient and her veins were "all collapsed due to chemo". Diane demonstrated critical thinking while using her excellent clinical skills to draw blood and access a vein to be used to administer chemotherapy in a single needle puncture. This seemingly small clinical act provided less discomfort to the patient and her husband. He, having been a health care professional himself, wrote, "I think I know an excellent nurse when I see one."
