Diane is one of our senior nurses on the unit and a role model for everyone. There are many examples that I could describe to you but will give only a few. Diane is one of our CRRT nurses. She is an excellent resource for all of the team members. She always answers questions in a very calm manner and has an incredible knack for teaching. She is always there to help out with any pump problems. She handles everything in her calm demeanor which calms everyone in the room.
She has gone to another unit to run CRRT and has been the go to person for this family. They were much more comfortable leaving their daughter's bedside if Diane was there. Diane is an excellent educator for families as well. She answers questions factually, gently, and thoroughly. She takes as much time as needed to calm families' anxieties.
She doesn't only care for the patients, but cares for the whole family unit. Recently she was caring for a patient at the end of her life. She was so kind and gentle with this young lady's family. She delivers difficult information with such compassion. She cares for her patients with the same compassion. While doing invasive procedures she maintains this young lady's dignity by making sure she was covered at all times. Her gentle manner shows in how she handles her patients.
Diane goes above and beyond for her patients. There is one little boy that comes every month for an infusion. Diane picks up extra shifts to be able to admit this little boy and make sure his stay goes smoothly. She brought him in birthday gifts so that he would have something fun to play with while he was here.
Diane also takes on a huge part of our scheduling committee. She works many hours on our schedule to make sure it is as fair as possible for everyone. She looks out for everyone. She will do whatever it takes to make things better in our unit. I am honored to call her my co-worker. This is an incredibly hard unit to work in and to make a lifelong career here shows her dedication to the PICU as well as CHP.
Note: this is Diane's second DAISY Award!
