Diane obtained the mother's grocery list and bought the groceries before returning to work the next night.
Diane went above and beyond to provide care for a Spanish-speaking patient. The patient she was caring for was not eating anything, and this kept her from going home. Diane was able to communicate with the patient and her mother and determine that part of the reason she was not eating was because she was not used to and did not like standard American food. The patient and her family had recently sought asylum in the United States to pursue additional treatment for the patient's neuroblastoma. Diane asked the patient's mother if she would consider cooking something for the patient. The mother said she would but did not have a car or access to purchase ingredients. Diane obtained the mother's grocery list and bought the groceries before returning to work the next night. The patient's mother was able to cook food the patient knew and enjoyed. The patient ate a full plate of dinner that night and was able to be discharged the next day after showing the providers she could eat. This nurse’s problem-solving skills, exceptional communication, and personal sacrifice allowed this patient to be discharged from the hospital earlier than anticipated.
