Diane stood behind the mother and quietly directed her on what to say to the patient to have the patient put down the weapon and retreat to the stretcher.
Diane displayed a professional and calm manner during a very volatile situation in our emergency department. She had the care of a psychiatric patient in an acute state and rapidly escalating. While other staff were gathering medication to give the patient she was attempting to deescalate the situation by talking to the patient and his mother. The patient managed to damage the room door and had a piece of it turned into a weapon so security was called. The door piece was taken from the patient but he then broke off a piece of the stretcher to use as a weapon. Diane advocated for police presence as they were more experienced in disarming someone than our security and had personal protection equipment which our security did not. When police arrived and we were preparing to safely disarm the patient Diane again showed her professionalism and compassion. The patient started to focus and listen to his mother. Diane stood behind the mother and quietly directed her on what to say to the patient to have the patient put down the weapon and retreat to the stretcher. This gave staff the opportunity to get in the room safely put the patient in restraints and administer the calming medication without further injury to the patient or staff. Without Diane’s caring and advocation for the patient and staff, the situation could have devolved into injuries to the patient and staff and increased police involvement which may have traumatized the patient and his family.
