I was introduced to Diane not realizing how much of an impact she would have on my nursing career. At the time, we both worked on labor and delivery. She was my charge nurse and I was just starting my career as a registered nurse. As a new nurse, this leader took the time to answer many of my questions and never made me feel like I was ever a burden to her, ever. I felt an instant connection with her. The more I talked to her and got to know her, I realized how talented and highly intelligent she is. As I continually grew in my career, I knew she was going to be my role model for years to come because she had every quality as a nurse and human being that I envisioned.
When it came time to choose a pathway in my career to do either management or orienting new staff, she was there to help support me in the decision I wanted. My current manager at the time was slightly firm on me orienting new staff and Diane spoke to management. She believed in me. She told me she would put me on one schedule to trial the charge nurse position out. Eventually, she began training me for a charge nurse position. When we moved to the new hospital, Diane, myself and previously our current educator, were the three chosen for the permanent charge nurse positions to lead the dayshift Family Birthing Unit. Not for a moment did I ever think I would have been one of the three chosen to fill that role.
Diane transitioned into the manager of not only the Family Birthing Center but also the Special Care Nursery. Currently, she manages and leads two units successfully. There have been many positive changes since she has taken over this leadership role. She has brought our family birthing unit together and her approach is truly exceptional. She incorporates team building activities and promotes positive crucial conversation between staff members. She is easily accessible should you need her. The staff trusts her leadership abilities due to mutual respect and sense of justice. One characteristic that stands out about her is that if you are seeking advice she asks questions so you will critically think and try to problem solve yourself. This has helped me tremendously by building my confidence and the ability to explore other approaches. She is encouraging to all staff when our census is high and emotions of staff need uplifting. There have been numerous times where she has stepped in to care for patients, back up deliveries and help with staffing. She is an exceptional role-model in every aspect. Currently, she is in college pursuing her master's degree. She believes in strengthening nurses whether it be lending them a personal book of hers, encouraging an educational class, achieving your certification or continuing your education. Once she realizes a staff member's individual strengths, she makes the individual aware and encourages them to share their skill with others promoting a better team and enhancing the care we give to our patients.
I have the utmost and deepest respect for Diane, as she has seen me at my worst and best throughout my career and personal life. She has always been there to help support and guide me in the right direction as I know she has done for other staff as well. She is the most compassionate, selfless person/manager I have ever known. As I make my transition to the state of Alabama in June of this year, I won't forget all the valuable lessons I learned from this extraordinary professional. I know she is destined for other significant professional roles at some point in her nursing career. She is the epitome of what a Nurse Leader should be. I have been so honored to work with her for the last 12 years. I cannot imagine where I would be without my manager, my mentor, Diane Vanes.
