To all of the amazing nurses in the ICU, especially Abby, Kiersten, LaDonna, Brittney, Rob, CJ, and Sandra:

My mother was in the ICU for nine days. She was moved overnight to the main hospital once our family made the decision to provide her with comfort care only. Unfortunately, she passed soon after. I am blessed to have been with
her at her bedside.

I want to thank all of the nurses who work in the ICU, above all, those who worked with my mom. You showed her kindness and treated her like you would your own loved one. You spoke to her with a soft, caring voice. You gave her water from a spoon when she could no longer use a straw. You helped feed her once she could no longer feed herself. You checked her medication regularly so that she could be free of pain and discomfort. You repositioned her to keep her from bed sores. You bathed her and changed her gown nightly to help her feel better about herself. You spoke with her, not at her. You shared information between shifts so that the next nurse could pick up exactly where you left off. You did all of these things and so many more with a smile on your face and love in your heart.

You were also very kind to me. It is a difficult time for loved ones when their family member is in the ICU; you understood that. You let me stay with her every night. You shared information with me so I could make informed decisions about her care. You called me at home when there was an unsettling decline in her health, knowing I wanted to be with her in the end. You allowed me to help care for her. You respected my decisions, helping me remain objective and positive when it was so very hard to do so. And, you respected me as a person, making me feel heard and seen.

I believe that nursing is a calling. It takes a very special person to be a nurse and an exceptional person to do it with the care and quality that you all do. I am eternally grateful for every second my mother was in your care. She could not have been in better hands, and that gives me so much solace and peace. Thank you for everything you do and for every patient you help.
