Dillon came to the aid of a pediatric patient at Hospice of West Alabama. They had a young man in the final stages of life. He was dying of cancer and required very high doses of pain medications that could only be given by IV.
When Hospice of West Alabama lost IV access, we called DCH for help as we were unable to get another IV started because his veins were too small. We called the Access Team at DCH and Dillon came to Hospice of West Alabama on his day off to help start some new IVs. Dillon was able to start several IVs under ultrasound guidance and we were able to keep the young patient comfortable through his final hours and days; much to the relief of his family as well as our staff. We could not have done this without Dillon.
The Executive Director of Hospice said, "Mr. Sartain arrived at our unit within the hour, on his off day from DCH and was extremely professional, compassionate, and competent. He was successful with the placement of reliable I.V. access (using an ultrasound machine) and it was not an easy task, as the child was dehydrated and his veins were extremely fragile."
