I had a very large surgery on my spine which caused my hemoglobin to drop to a level of six. I was feeling terrible. A doctor came to tell me I would need a blood transfusion and explained the risks. I was scared for myself and my family so I refused initially. My nurse came in and sat with me. She explained everything in a way I could understand and was so kind and reassuring. She said she would be with me through it all, and she was. She continually explained what was happening to me and spent extra time with me even though I knew she had other patients. She encouraged me and I developed trust in her. She always had a kind and reassuring word or touch and smile. She helped me relax. She not only took care of my body but also took care of me psychologically. Her focus on the positive aspects of the transfusion, like feeling stronger helped me make a tough decision. Because of her, I was able to go home to my family. What she did touched not just me but also my family. I am a son, husband, brother, and father, and because of her care, my whole family will always be appreciative. She exemplifies what it means to be a nurse.
