I am so happy to say with this compassionate care the transfer was canceled and after 2 days with Dixie, my husband was discharged to go home.
My husband is 66 years old with his first hospital admission being 2 years ago. He was referred to another facility by his surgeon after an emergency gallbladder removal. Needless to say, after 3 surgeries, chemo, and radiation he is not the picture-perfect patient. This second round of chemo has given him just about every side effect.
Last week, he was admitted to UPMC Western Maryland for pneumonia through the Emergency Department. He arrived on the unit late at night. The following morning, Dixie was his nurse. I arrived earlier than visiting hours permitted. Dixie approved for me to come to the unit since the plan was for transfer to another facility. When Dixie entered the room each time things started to happen throughout the day she consistently kept us updated on the bed status at the other facility, always looked out for his comfort and needs, always asked if he needed anything else, always turned to me and asked if I needed anything, always pointed out he could get her if needed. I am so happy to say with this compassionate care the transfer was canceled and after 2 days with Dixie, my husband was discharged to go home. He was so anxious for this discharge-he asked how long it would take. Dixie replied, “can you give me 1 hour?” I must be honest…. we didn’t think it would happen. Forty minutes later, here comes Dixie with his discharge instructions. She already had the pharmacist there and medications were delivered. WOW! That is exceptional! Thank you, Dixie!
