Before he left the water, he asked if he was left-handed or right-handed so he could make sure the handle of the pitcher was on the correct side.
This nurse came in the night of my dad's surgery. I felt like the day shift care was good, but more reactionary than proactive. Due to my dad's medical history and surgery, we were really concerned with pain management and anxiety due to the difficulty breathing with a lobe of his lung now missing. He kept waking with fear that he couldn't breathe and he'd hurt himself if he breathed deeply. We asked for pain meds and kept assuring him that he was doing great and couldn't hurt himself with the deep breaths. The pain was from his chest tube. I was considering staying overnight in his room or the lobby, which has no couches, recliners, etc. My dad's anxiety started getting so high before the day shift left that he needed a nitro drip to treat his BP. Within 15 minutes of this nurse taking over care, my mind was put at ease. He came in, did a thorough assessment, and listened to my dad and our concerns. This nurse noticed that my dad was drinking a lot of water, and instead of my dad having to wait between each 120ml cup of water as he had been, he brought in a pitcher of water. Before he left the water, he asked if he was left-handed or right-handed so he could make sure the handle of the pitcher was on the correct side. Sometimes it really is the little things that mean A LOT. He helped ease my anxiety. I came back about 1.5 hours later, just after 10 pm, to see how my dad was doing with pain and anxiety. In the absence of family, this nurse made sure to check on my dad's pain, offer and give all meds available, and was able to tell me the time each future med was due. My dad was able to come off the nitro with the tighter pain management and reassurance through this nurse's considerate, cool, and confident demeanor. This was the icing on the cake, per se. I felt 100% confident I could leave for the night and sleep well knowing my dad was in excellent care. I, too, am an ICU nurse and specialize in CVICU. I work in a hospital out of state that is a lot more updated than this particular Cleveland Clinic facility. I add this detail because I am a person who accommodates easily to others and goes with the flow, but can admit it takes a lot to impress me. This nurse always had a smile on his face. While all of this may seem like the "standard of care," I believe that most of us can agree that, unfortunately, it is not.
