Dominic Olivieri, BSN, RN
My husband underwent open-heart surgery at Northwestern Palos Hospital. He received 1:1 nursing care in the Cardiac ICU. As I write this nomination on Day 2 of his ICU stay, I want to acknowledge that the entire Northwestern team has done a terrific job and is worthy of recognition. However, I would like to specifically highlight one exceptional nurse: Dominic O.
Dominic is an outstanding nurse who is consistently attentive and goes above and beyond to ensure patient comfort remains his top priority. The critical care required to manage a post–open-heart surgery patient is monumental. It involves constant monitoring of vital signs and medications, making timely adjustments, and collaborating closely with physician assistants and the surgeon—all of which demand patience, precision, and meticulous attention to detail. Dominic demonstrated these qualities flawlessly.
My husband experienced severe anxiety and attempted to pull at his tubes and oxygen mask. Dominic’s calm presence and quick response were instrumental in de-escalating the situation and keeping my husband safe. When my husband was desperately craving water due to extreme mouth dryness but was restricted from drinking, Dominic managed his distress with professionalism, compassion, and empathy. His bedside manner is truly exceptional.
Dominic is a gifted nurse whose passion for patient-centered care is evident in everything he does. He is not there simply for a paycheck—he shows up because he genuinely loves his job, and it shows. While my husband was blessed with the skilled hands of his surgeon, he was equally blessed to be under the care of Dominic O.
Having worked in hospitality for nearly 30 years, I know what genuine, high-quality service looks like. The care my husband received from Dominic made a meaningful difference in his recovery experience. Dominic O. is truly deserving of this nomination and should proudly wear the DAISY on his badge.
