I would proudly like to nominate Dominick Scalera for The DAISY Award. In learning what this award represents, Dominick embodies every meaning of it! He is warm, compassionate, and dedicated to his craft and patients! I can personally attest to this. In February I was under Dominick's care. As you can imagine, I was in pain and healing from surgery. Dominick immediately made me feel comfortable and confident that I was in good hands. He has a high-level standard of professionalism with a truly empathetic disposition. He was patient with me and kind. I could go on about his personal characteristics that seem innate to who he is, BUT, a situation happened...
On the morning that I was preparing to be discharged and Dominick's shift was ending, my mom, who was there to take me home, had a health episode of her own. While in my room and was healing myself, my mom felt faint and quickly took a seat, she couldn't speak or find her words and we knew she needed medical attention. Dominick took immediate action! He attended her side calmly, reassuring her, and called in the appropriate professionals to take her to the emergency room. In her departure, I became a confused, fragile, a mess. I didn't know what to do and started to panic. Dominick pulled a chair beside my bed and stayed long after his shift had ended to reassure me all is well and to communicate between departments updates on my mom.
To conclude my story, my mom is well and so am I. However, I must highlight, that story may have ended, but my experience with Dominick lives on. He is amazing and a perfect representation of what a nurse is and should be. He is a true DAISY Nurse.
