Last week Dominique Boesken was in her second week of training as a new registered nurse. We were taking care of a patient who had been experiencing a difficult transition after surgery. The patient was experiencing much pain and discomfort and was basically inconsolable with pain relief. Her fiancé was directing us to call the doctor to get him to come in to talk with the patient. It was a very difficult time for both of them. The patient was medicated as ordered, but when the medicine wore off, the patient was back to being inconsolable. On her own, Dominique decided to share her own story with the patient. She sat at her patient’s bedside, held her hand, and calmly reflected and shared her own feelings after a similar situation. The patient was soon calmer and started to rest easier. I feel that this selfless act showed so much compassion and demonstrated integrity. Dominique is a true DAISY Nurse.
