Through the process of checking in to moving me to a room for the night after the clot was cleared (which took several hours), Donna never left my side.
I was a patient of Donna's in for a cardiac catheterization that morning. We had a great conversation before the procedure to build some comfort and rapport. Following the procedure, I mentioned to her that something didn't feel right. She checked my vitals, offered me a beverage, suggested relaxing a bit since my vitals were on the high side, and asked that I just give it a few minutes. She never left the room. A short time later, I went from a little discomfort to a 2-3 pain level. Donna checked my vitals again, and my vitals were still high. A few minutes later, and I am at a level 5 pain level. Donna handed me a small pill and suggested I put it under my tongue. She assured me that everything would be alright, but that she needed to go and get help. I was still a bit foggy from the anesthesia, but I'm thinking to myself, I know what this little pill is, why is she giving me this? I'm not having a heart attack! She returned with the team lead and an entire surgical team in tow. I was asked questions. My new pain level was a 9. I overheard a conversation about the OR being ready and how quickly we needed to move, as there wasn't time to wait. As the conversations were happening around me, I went under and lost consciousness. Long story short, I had a blood clot in the stent that was just placed in my heart, ironically, in the widow-maker. Through the process of checking in to moving me to a room for the night after the clot was cleared (which took several hours), Donna never left my side. She heard me, understood me, and knew exactly what to do given the circumstances. Had I been anywhere but where I was at that moment in time, I wouldn't be writing this. Donna was my guardian angel that day, and I owe her a debt of gratitude for the compassionate care and attention she paid to me that day. I've since lost about 55 pounds, successfully completed cardiac rehab, had both knees replaced, and continue my involvement in community and civic organizations. I have so much more energy as well! Without Donna's in our world, it would be a different place. Thank you, Donna Hill, for everything you did to make L 2.0 possible!
