Donna stood at this child's bedside, talking, touching, and holding him while listening to calm music in hopes of keeping him breathing until his mother arrived.
Recently, I floated to PICU and realized that PICU nurses are truly special people. It still brings tears to my eyes thinking about that night. When I worked in the peds ER, patients would come in with asystole, we would work on them until the doctor called it, comfort the family, and then move on to care for another sick child. I have never experienced/ witnessed what it was like to care for a child with an impending death. That night in PICU, there was a DNR patient who was not going to make it through the night, and his mother was 4 hours away. If I didn't know any better, I would have thought that Donna was his mother. This child's heartbeat and sats dropped to the 40s, and we all thought he wasn't going to make it. Donna stood at this child's bedside, talking, touching, and holding him while listening to calm music in hopes of keeping him breathing until his mother arrived. Shortly after, you see this little boy's heart rate and sats go up and stay that way until his mother comes to his side. It truly was unbelievable to witness. After the fact, I told Donna just how touching it was to watch her care for this child like it was her own, especially since he was a chronic patient and that she never treated him differently. Her response to me was, "That's the only way I know how to do it. No child should ever die alone." Donna is a nurse you want around for a lifetime even if some don't have a lifetime to live. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
