Angels come in many shapes and forms: one never knows when you will encounter them but I grew up believing that they are all around us and if we don’t pay attention: we would not even know that they are living among us. They are the teachers, the doctors, & nurses that make an impact in our lives in a regular consistent manner. Working in a level 1 trauma center I have had the privilege to be involved in a team that has helped save over 1,200 lives in codes; It’s nothing like in the movies portray, yet I would not consider myself a hero nor deserving of this DAISY award, you see my teammates and I have improved our outcomes due to constant exposure; similar to that of an athlete that trains for finals. Experience is our advantage; Anyone can save a life using basic CPR skills and either ACLS or PALS algorithms but not everyone can make a truly life-changing impact like saving one’s soul. Today's opioid abuse has increasingly gotten worse to the point where our elected officials have classified it as an epidemic; we are at war, like any war we have causalities, I have served in the army in my younger years; active during desert shield to desert storm. This drug war is no different than any war our great nation has gone through in the past; costing millions of dollars and losing thousands of lives. It destroys the family unit from the inside out. What this nurse does may be very simple. You would think just about anyone could do it but they can’t. She religiously encourages and supports the patient through their 21 days of the recovery process. So many times they are tempted to give up because they have been ostracized from their families and loved ones due to their past behavior. I have seen them all alone or just feeling alone. A simple smile, a kind compliment, a lending ear, compassion, and empathy are her strong attributes. Some people try but for her, it comes naturally. I admire her determination; even though she has lost a loved one to this opioid epidemic she somehow manages to get up every day and show up to work. I do not know how many people are as strong as this lady. I’m inspired by her devotion to the cause and this is why I am nominating her for the DAISY award. I know no one else more deserving. Please give her the recognition even though she never asked for it, she deserves it.
