I have known Donnetta over the years as we have been on committees together. I always felt she was a strong leader and patient advocate. However, I have gotten to see her in her work setting over the past few months because I am the case manager on her unit. Donnetta is the Assistant Leader on one of the most difficult units in the hospital. It is a high acuity medical step-down unit. She advocates fiercely for her staff and patients. She will take a heavy team and still manage to assist her coworkers. What is the most inspiring is that Donnetta has been a nurse for many years and she treats her patients with extreme kindness and practices the artistry of nursing. She is the nurse who takes the time to talk to her patients, get to know their families, and treats them with utmost dignity. Every hospital needs nurses and leaders like Donnetta. She will be the first person to assist in an emergency and guide the newer nurses with her expertise. In the 7 months I have worked with Donnetta, I have never seen her act anything less than positive and professional. The way she cares for her unit and patients is definitely exemplary.
