I had been to the ER/Observation Department 5 times due to chronic illness and just being blunt, my experience was not so pleasant. I had been poked and prodded numerous times (actually 2x in my nerve when trying to set an IV) and being told that I needed to be transferred to another hospital for specialization, so I had to be admitted as a patient in order to receive treatment. I wasn't looking forward to admittance considering the treatment I had been receiving. I was given a room on the 4th floor and I was feeling really saddened, almost depressed that I would have to stay here longer and who knows and what more I would have to endure.
As I sat in my room, Donnie Greer walked into the room with such enthusiasm and most importantly, kindness. I had to answer the redundant questioning in which I gave him the answers before he even asked. He coughed and told me that I had made his day. But then he, in turn, made mine.
I suffer from type I diabetes and Donnie had to administer my shot. He took me by surprise and asked me, "What do you prefer, a plane or a train?" I was puzzled in his question because no one had ever asked me that question. So, I told him, "A plane because you get to your destination quicker." He then asked which arm I wanted my shot in and I gave him my left arm. Then all of a sudden, Donnie makes an airplane flying noise and delivered my shot! I laughed so hard that it brought tears to my eyes. To take a moment of kindness with humor to make me feel at ease was priceless.
Every day he made me feel comforted and at peace with his care. He unselfishly presented attentiveness, understanding and such a special touch of humanity that was a breath of fresh air. I slept like a baby for the first time in months and I owe that to Donnie's care.
He is the perfect example of what a nurse, doctor, anyone who is taking care of people should aspire to be like. Donnie made everything that was disappointing, seem minimal. He is the diamond in the rough, the "it factor", the creme de la creme, the best thing since sliced bread! In short, Donnie is exemplary in all he does!
Thank you, Donnie Greer, for giving me hope that there are people who still care and love helping others. Don't change!
