Donovan's transformational leadership style has empowered our nursing staff of over 225 nurses and 30 administrative members. He drives a culture that encourages input and allows nursing to take ownership of issues and projects that will positively impact our department.Donovan conducts mentorship meetings and mock interview panels with nurses who are interested in becoming directors one day themselves. Over the past two years, six nurses have been promoted to Assistant Clinical Director positions within our department, while six have left for managerial positions at other Kaiser Permanente locations around Southern California.
Our charge nurse meetings used to have five-six attendees, now, each meeting is packed with about 30-40 nurses who are relief charge and charge nurses. Our department has never been more engaged regarding the success of our operations and patient care.
Aside from his unwavering leadership, Donovan has also improved our operations and flow process which has reduced Fast Track times from 4 hours to 90 minutes.
Donovan also invites and allows our nurse leaders to help other Kaiser Permanente Emergency Departments. We help by teaching and demonstrating how our flow process positively expedites patient care and how they may be able to apply it to their departments.
Our nurse leader staff have developed an extra skill to identify barriers and adjust properly to accommodate influxes. We have also learned how to build relationships outside our department in order to help our brothers and sisters in the medical center. The future is bright for our department and we owe a great deal of our success to the leadership style that Donovan has shared with us.
