Dora successfully diffused the patient when he became verbally aggressive by reminding him in a calm manner "we are here for you".
Dora Themistocleous is an outstanding bedside nurse. In a career field that is famous for empathy she possesses an amazing level of calm and understanding beyond most others. She has a reputation for forging relationships with veterans that are challenging to care for and has a reputation with her peers as being the kindest of souls. She demonstrated her exemplary skills when caring for her group. Dora was assigned a COVID positive patient who was admitted with Suicidal Ideation. The patient had transferred to the unit a few days earlier angry about an issue with his belongings that predated his care on 4 East. He started his time on the unit shouting and cursing about this issue. Dora successfully diffused the patient when he became verbally aggressive by reminding him in a calm manner "we are here for you". She remained calm when caring for this patient for the remainder of the day until discharge in the early afternoon. The discharge was postponed the day before due to the patient being uncooperative. Dora effectively communicated with the patient offered therapeutic listening, and problem solved several issues to the satisfaction of the Veteran, ultimately leading him to express his appreciation for the nursing staff. On the same day, Dora accepted an admission from the emergency room. The Veteran, who was on 6L of oxygen, refused to surrender his cigarettes and lighter to the CNA who was completing his Admission Belongings Note. Another RN spoke to the Veteran and he again refused to give up his cigarettes stating that he wouldn't smoke in the room but intended to smoke in the stairwell! Dora entered the room and explained the smoking policy to the Veteran as well as her safety concern for the Veteran. While she was communicating to the Veteran, the Nurse Manager entered the room to speak to the Veteran. Dora 'shooed' the Nurse Manager out of the room saying, "everything is okay". Dora's calm and friendly manner quickly earned the trust of the Veteran and he turned over his cigarettes and lighter. Dora is not only a technically astute RN she has a very calm demeanor that cannot be taught and that lessens the anxiety level in the Veterans that she cares for. Her calmness is also a welcome presence on 4East. Dora is a true asset to the VA and provides a nurturing presence to the Veterans in her care.
