She connected with translators, social workers, case managers, and the patient's family day after day to make sure she wasn't missing anything that could be of help to this patient.
Dorie is a natural nurse leader in whatever she does, but in this particular situation, she went above and beyond what a "good nurse" would do. There was a patient admitted with a disease who required not 1, but 2 ostomies. This patient did not speak English and did not have insurance. Dorie spent multiple hours a DAY in this patient's room communicating, teaching, and advocating. She provided exceptional patient care as she did trial upon trial with different pouching systems so the patient could lead a somewhat normal life without ostomy complications. Because she didn't have insurance, obtaining ostomy supplies presented a huge problem as her discharge date approached. Dorie committed to reaching out to many donation centers, even searching while at home and very late into the night when her shift was finished. She connected with translators, social workers, case managers, and the patient's family day after day to make sure she wasn't missing anything that could be of help to this patient. This exemplary care of Ascension's mission to "serve all persons with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable" is what Dorie Zelaya is made of. I am so proud to work with such an amazing nurse.
