Doris is kind, understanding, and most of all, she lets you be who you are and feel your emotions.
Doris was ever-present throughout my twins' hospital stay. I went from working to having my twins 10 weeks early and coming into Benioff every day for 68 days thereafter. It was incredibly difficult to have my life change within hours, to being a patient and mother of two ICU patients. Doris is kind, understanding, and most of all, she lets you be who you are and feel your emotions. She has a reassuring aura about her, and she spoke to me respectfully. She shared personal stories with me that allowed me to find common ground with her, relative to my own situation and previous ones experienced by her.
Doris was able to educate me on testing, vital signs, and common practices. Often, she repeated herself, at my request, to reassure me that my kids were okay and that the things that they were experiencing were just because they were born early, not because anything was inherently wrong. Every day we would come in to visit our boys, and any day that we were lucky enough to have Doris as our nurse made us feel like we won the lottery. She is funny, intelligent, relaxed, and a true leader and role model in nursing.
