My husband D and I would like to recognize Dot for her extraordinary service to both D and me during his hospitalization. D was in Mobile for a work-related trip when a complication of his bladder and kidneys caused him to be hospitalized. He ended up on 8 East alone and many miles from our home in Maryland. Dot was one of his nurses from the start.
I couldn't join D for a couple of days to help care for him because I had to make arrangements for the kids, but Dot was already making her mark giving D personal attention and care. As soon as I arrived and Dot realized I was staying with D, she brought me a cot and rearranged the room calling it the Providence Honeymoon sweet! There are many other examples of her going out of her way to show her care.
Since it was Mardi Gras week, and we have no celebration like that in Maryland, she offered to bring us some king cake and Mardi Gras beads! Additionally, if there was an unclaimed or extra meal tray, Dot would set it aside for me to have! It was just such a thoughtful act. Even on the day of D's surgery, she set aside his lunch and reheated it as we were on our way back, so it was warm and ready!
Dot was always quick to respond and would hop up from whatever she was doing whether to just get D an ice chip, nausea med, or extra blanket. We never once felt like she was put out, but always like D was her number one patient. D has been hospitalized many times over the course of his cancer, and he has not had a nurse like Dot before. I am so thankful for the opportunity to recognize her work, care, and concern for the patient.
