Ms. Piper provided empathetic support and let them know that she was going to try her best to help them find an affordable answer.
Ms. Piper was presented with a troubling dilemma when one of her elderly veterans expressed concern regarding a life-saving infusion treatment that was recently prescribed to him. He desperately needed the prescribed infusions and was willing to participate in the treatment. However, being elderly on a fixed income and without a car, he did not have transportation to Bay Pines VA for his treatments, where these very expensive treatments would be financially covered.
Community care was not an option for this treatment, and he would have to pay cash if he could not get to the VA. The bill would be so significant in size that the couple would need to file for bankruptcy, which would include losing their home by the end of all the infusion treatments. Ms. Piper provided empathetic support and let them know that she was going to try her best to help them find an affordable answer.
Ms. Piper immediately started calling local area treatment centers, community support groups, working with the VA social worker, and whoever she could find in this quest to keep them from financial ruin.
After 3 days of calling and following up on potential leads for treatment, she was finally presented with a successful lead right here at the Sarasota outpatient center. In April, Sarasota just opened a new "Close to me" infusion clinic, and she was able to get this veteran scheduled into the program. She reported that when she told him, he and his wife sobbed tears of joy!
