I am writing to recognize Doug Hubbell for the exceptional professionalism, compassion, and clinical excellence he demonstrated while working on our unit. I am truly honored to have Doug as part of our team.

During a recent shift, our unit experienced a profoundly distressing event when a staff member suffered a sudden, life-altering medical emergency while at work. In a moment that required immediate action and strong leadership, Doug responded without hesitation. With calm urgency and clinical precision, he took decisive action to ensure our colleague was safely transported to the Emergency Department within minutes, prior to the arrival of the STAT team, so that critical care could begin as quickly as possible. His rapid response was instrumental in ensuring the best possible outcome in an incredibly time-sensitive situation.

Equally impactful was Doug’s compassion and advocacy beyond the clinical response. When challenges arose in reaching the staff member’s emergency contact, Doug went above and beyond, leveraging every available resource, including contacting her travel agency, to help notify her family. He recognized the importance of connection, dignity, and support during one of life’s most vulnerable moments and took it upon himself to ensure that our colleague was not alone in that experience.

Since this event, our team has been navigating the emotional weight of this situation. Our colleague has since had care withdrawn and is currently in hospice. This has deeply affected the 11WD team, who are grieving and struggling with the anticipated loss of someone they care about deeply, especially given that this life-altering event occurred while she was at work among us. Doug’s presence in that moment, and the humanity he demonstrated, has had a lasting impact not only on the care provided, but also on the emotional resilience of the team during this incredibly difficult time.

Doug’s actions exemplify not only clinical excellence, but also the empathy, leadership, and selflessness that define extraordinary nursing practice. He was a steady, compassionate presence in one of the most challenging situations a team can face, and his impact will not be forgotten.

Thank you, Doug, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
