Doug Deorsey doesn't just treat illnesses; he touches hearts and heals souls. His unwavering commitment to patient care, advocacy, and professional growth, combined with his innate compassion, make him an exemplary nurse.
In the quiet sanctity of the ICU room, Doug Deorsey leaned in, addressing a visibly frightened patient with a gentleness that is the hallmark of his care. "Friend," he murmured, "I'm going to adjust these just a little to make you more comfortable." The patient's relief was palpable, a testament to Doug's ability to assuage fears with mere words. While I cannot recall the name of this patient, it epitomizes Doug's approach: every patient, every time. His care is always imbued with compassion, dignity, and unmatched competence.

Doug has consistently stood out as a beacon of advocacy, especially for our most vulnerable patients – those who, for various reasons, cannot effectively communicate their needs. A memorable instance of this advocacy was when a patient on the Autism Spectrum was admitted to the ICU. Recognizing a gap in our care approach, Doug coordinated with our ICU Nurse Educator to deliver an enlightening presentation titled "Understanding and Responding to Challenging Behaviors" that he had prepared. This initiative not only enhanced the ICU team's capabilities but also showcased Doug's willingness to share his insights with his colleagues. Moreover, Doug has shared his willingness to offer the presentation more widely in the hospital should it be desired.

But perhaps the most poignant testament to Doug's exceptionalism was his care for a critically ill patient with a poor prognosis. Once an avid hiker, the patient found herself battling a rare ailment that rendered her immobile and necessitating a ventilator. The vibrant woman who had completed a 13-mile hike mere weeks ago was now communicating in whispers and gestures. When her condition continued to decline, she opted for comfort care, and Doug was her nurse, and a guiding presence by her side on her final day. The Sutter Hospice Liaison described Doug as "the embodiment of compassion, exuding an exquisite calmness." She continued, "His attentiveness, ability to decipher this patient’s wishes about donating her body, and his adept handling of the intricate psycho-social-spiritual facets of her care were unparalleled."

Doug Deorsey doesn't just treat illnesses; he touches hearts and heals souls. His unwavering commitment to patient care, advocacy, and professional growth, combined with his innate compassion, make him an exemplary nurse. It is with immense respect and admiration that I nominate Doug for the DAISY Award.
