Douglas Whitby, RN

My husband was admitted to the ICU following an endoscopy where he coded during the procedure. His mom was also admitted to the Heart & Vascular ICU the same day. Douglas understood through all my pain and tears what we needed, and that was to be educated on my mother-in-law’s condition and keep my husband stable. About an hour after my husband got to the ICU, we got a call from my brother-in-law that Mom wasn’t doing well. Doug found my mother-in-law’s doctor, who came to our bedside and let us know that she was extremely ill and not doing well, but he was doing everything he could.

About 10min later we heard Code Blue HVI and I ran to the door, when I opened it Doug was already on the phone calling the floor and when he hung up and shook his head yes, I knew it was her. He immediately sprang into action and got a transport cart, unhooked my husband, and rushed him to his mom’s bedside. I know this is not standard protocol, but this man knew my husband needed to say goodbye to his mother, and he made it happen. Douglas is truly an asset to Memorial Hermann and deserves this award as he went above and beyond for our family!
