It’s not every day that you come across someone who shows compassion, empathy, and respect to their patients and their coworkers. These are all qualities that I think of when I think about what I would want from someone responsible for my care or the care of my loved ones and someone to work with. I also appreciate someone who goes the extra mile, is always positive, and is a team player. Drew Hertzfeld encompasses all these traits and more. He is always going above and beyond for his patients. Patients enjoy interacting with him, and he always brings a smile to their faces. He is compassionate when they are upset and does his best to help in any way that he can. He also demonstrates leadership and is a team player when interacting with his team. He is always ready to collaborate and do what is best for a patient and will speak his opinion, share his knowledge, and advocate on behalf of the patient. He also has his teammate’s back. Recently, there was an incident where a patient attempted to approach me while agitated as I asked patients to go to their rooms for safety with a code. This nurse recognized that the patient was targeting me and immediately asked the patient not to approach me. The patient attacked him in his efforts to protect me. I am grateful for him and his proactiveness in that situation so that I did not get hurt. Since the incident, this nurse still treats the patient with dignity, respect, and kindness. He deserves recognition because of the everlasting dedication, compassion, kindness, and teamwork he demonstrates every day with his patients and his teammates. He shows up and is always willing to go the extra mile. He truly encompasses what the DAISY Award and Northwest Ohio Behavioral Healthcare are all about: respect, compassion, and excellence.
