Dwight Sykora, RN on the 311:1 MS/TELE South team demonstrates our mission and core values with each encounter and shows his pride and passion of being a nurse as he cares for our patients.
Dwight has so much pride and passion for the care he provides and that of the team. He makes it a point to ensure his patients are emotionally, physically, and spiritually cared for. He makes time to be with his patients even with all the pressures for documentation and completing tasks. For instance, we had an elderly woman who was without family support and lonely. He stayed in her room when documenting to be present, to talk to her, to spend time with her every chance he had. He chooses to stop and make eye contact, to touch, to smile, to reassure and to be present. When I rounded on the patient she referred to Dwight as "an Angel in disguise".
Dwight does not await instruction on how to improve situations or what the next step should be in difficult situations. He is the first to take accountability and make necessary accommodations for the team and the patients. He has volunteered on numerous occasions to stay late to assist the team in staffing crunches, to assist with a 1:1 patient past his shift, and to take the next admission when a fellow team member is swamped. He thinks of the overall picture and understands that the patients awaiting a bed are best cared for by him or his team.
Dwight is frequently in my office as well as discussing with team members ways to improve the unit and the care we provide. He is truly engaged and accountable for the success of the unit.
Even in those moments when he is clocked out and on his way out the door after a 13 hour shift he takes the time to be our mission. He sees a family member of an ICU patient arriving to the hospital and having difficulty reaching her loved one. He stops and obtains a wheelchair from the unit and takes the family member to the unit and then begins to go over the events of the day with her - well past his shift and off the clock.
The team acknowledges that Dwight is a blessing and in fact "An angel in disguise" for our patients, our team, and our CHRISTUS. We are proud to work alongside such a healer. Dwight is an outstanding role model and deserves the Daisy Award to acknowledge his positive and healing presence on our team.
