When we talk about compassionate, patient-centered care, Dylan Boyles is one nurse who truly lives that each day. He often sits down at the bedside when he talks to patients and their families, and really takes the time to connect with them beyond their diagnosis. Dylan has been recognized numerous times in patient surveys and patient rounding for his great care and the ability to build relationships with patients.
These are just a few of the comments patients have shared: "Dylan was extremely professional, very knowledgeable, caring and explained everything." "My main nurse, Dylan, was amazing! He took the time to get to know me and explain everything that was happening to me."
Sometimes it's just a few extra minutes that Dylan spends sitting with a patient, and other times much longer, but the impact is huge. All of these small gestures and extra moments have made a big difference for many patients on our unit. This impact can be seen in the following story we heard during patient rounding.
As the patient was transferring to skilled care, their son didn't understand why they weren't staying in the hospital to get better instead of transferring to skilled. The son was very concerned that his father wasn't getting better and was being transferred without a physician addressing his care. Even the patient's wife wasn't able to convince her son it was the right plan. Dylan offered to talk to her son to let him know the progress his father was making, specifically addressing the measures they were using to manage his care and how they could see he was getting better. Dylan explained the use of skilled care and why the patient was going there. It was a huge relief to the patient and his wife to have Dylan address her son's concerns. They said that by the end of the call their son was laughing and joking with Dylan and felt better about the care plan.
This patient had some periods of confusion and Dylan was able to handle things so well and made the patient feel comfortable. Dylan's approach to the patient's confusion helped him feel better and less embarrassed. Dylan did a great job taking care of the patient and putting him and his family at ease.
