Dylan has been the best leader I ever had, and one day hope to model his same qualities.
Equanimity is the “State of mental balance and composure especially in challenging situations. Ability to remain calm, open, and non-reactive even when presented with challenges”. Dylan embodies equanimity to all areas of his professional life, which is one of many components that make him a standout leader. When you have a conversation with Dylan, regardless if it is addressing a safety concern, staff conflict, or personal matter, he listens without judgment or prejudice. He will gather all facts and ask for input prior to deciding his next steps that potentially could affect those around him.
It is crucial for leaders to understand how they react during times of stress and set the guidance on how others will follow. In Surgical Services, the entire team functions under high amounts of stress on a daily basis. This is why his calmness and confidence are crucial for a successful department. Dylan is always available to support others when needed. Rather, it be to function as a charge nurse, circulate, or scrub in for a surgical case. Advocate for staffing, cover for other managers, or answer phone calls and text messages regardless of the time of day. Most importantly, he is a strong advocate for checking in on every team member involved in tragic cases. He reaches out directly to staff involved and conducts debriefings to ensure that everyone involved has the opportunity to discuss the event without fear or being judged or punished.
Dylan has never been title-driven or strived for power, he is known to lift up others around him and never take credit for the crucial role he plays in their success. He is able to see the value of team building and its importance on patient outcomes. You can often see Dylan involved in promoting staff engagement within Surgical Services, collaborating with other units, supporting Kona Hospital Foundation events, celebrating and recognizing others personal and professional accomplishments, while striving to promote Kona Community Hospital as a quality driven hospital in the community.
Leaders have the ability to empower individuals and entire teams to accomplish great things. Dylan has been the best leader I ever had, and one day hope to model his same qualities.
