Earl is an amazing, caring, compassionate, humble, and loving nurse who is also a mentor, friend, and an incredible colleague. From the first time when Earl began his journey in the Critical Care, he exemplified caring behaviors and empathy towards his patients, families, and coworkers. When Earl was brand new, still in the Critical Care Academy, he was offering himself to turn patients, talk to families, and get us ice cream and candy when he saw that we were stressed. Earl didn't have to do those things, he did them because he wanted to because that is the caring and humble person that he is.
Earl has many hidden talents which we have learned about throughout his Critical Care journey. Earl is a motivational speaker and mentor to Versant graduates. He recently spoke at a Baptist Clinical Learning event and received a standing ovation for his inspirational story and heartfelt speech.
Earl is also a very talented musician and has played beautiful music on the piano for our Critical Care Champion's Dinner. This dinner is to honor patients that have survived when they were not expected to live due to their critical condition. Earl dedicates his time to honor our patients and families and to let them know how much we care for them. Earl is very concerned with patient outcomes and patient safety. He is very active with the Hospital Diabetes Committee and has helped to create an educational pamphlet for patients and families.
During a recent mock Joint Commission Survey, the surveyor was very impressed with Earl because he knew his patients so well, could articulate their plan of care, and had already met the first goal by 9 am. Earl managed to mobilize his mechanically vented patient from bed to chair safely and exceed the patient's and family's expectations so early in the morning. These are just a few things that Earl does on a daily basis.
The most inspiring attribute about Earl is his passion for nursing and desire to improve the relationships among the nurses in the unit. Earl is our Unit Magnet Maven and is very engaged with improving our units engagement. He has created surveys for the staff to assess their needs so that we can improve our respect, collegiality, relationships, and trust with each other. Earl shares the survey results during staff meetings and with our unit shared governance, so that we can collectively work together to improve our team.
Earl is a natural born leader whose nursing core is caring and respect. He inspires all of us daily. We have also realized that sometimes Earl forgets about himself. Earl will make sure that everyone has eaten in the unit and by 3 pm, Earl still hasnt eaten. He always takes care of everyone and never expects anything in return. We wanted Earl to know how appreciative we are of him and for all of the amazing great things that he does for Baptist Hospital. This is why we nominate Earl Wilson for a DAISY Award. Earl is truly deserving of this prestigious honor.
