She promised him that tomorrow she would come in and play music, to which she did a little dance and shimmy that made the patient laugh and smile ear to ear!
I am currently a travel nurse in the float pool here at Harborview Medical Center. Ebonee is a day shift nurse here on a very heavy neuro floor. She had to hand off her patients to me on night shift. What I witnessed in my full 30 mins of hand off was a joy and shine from this woman, that I rarely see anymore in my 7 years as a floor nurse, charge nurse, and trauma nurse. Her patient and his family lit up when she came into the room! Just even saying goodbye to the patient and family, just for the night, I watched her touch his hand, and tears ran down his face. She promised him that tomorrow she would come in and play music, to which she did a little dance and shimmy that made the patient laugh and smile ear to ear! His wife and daughter both praised how wonderful she was all day with them and then I watched her hug each person in the room goodbye and see you in the morning, in which the patient didn’t want to let her hand go. In that 5 minute interaction I saw why I went into nursing and why I still love my profession. I write this to Ebonee as a DAISY Award Honoree myself, and want to say thank you for being an outstanding shining light in a profession that seems to be occasionally dark and stormy; you are a well-needed light.
