Ed leads by example and has a calm demeanor
Ed Butin is a role model. To the staff, he is known as "Uncle Ed," the go-to person who knows the answer to everything and who also happens to be approachable and kind. He might even be called a "wise sage" who is the best.
Ed has been on 5 East for 34 years and in that time, he has taught and mentored countless nurses, who were mostly new staff on the night shift, on how to be successful in the ICU. Somehow, he never seems to get tired of teaching, listening, and giving advice year after year. He continues to give because the success of his colleagues is important to him. Ed is a quiet and supportive presence who gently nudges the staff to grow. The nurses feel safe to push themselves and move out of their comfort zones because they know he is there to back them up. If anything goes wrong, they trust that Ed will be right by their side to get them through. With all his years of experience, Ed is nothing but approachable and encouraging.
Ed leads by example and has a calm demeanor that is contagious. Unexpected problems arise all the time, but Ed just rolls with them and takes care of the issues. It is his strong work ethic that we see when he is the first one to jump up from his chair to help anyone and do whatever is needed.
One nurse said, "I relax a bit when I see that Ed is working. You always know the shift is going to be okay because he is there."
Thank you, Ed, for all that you do to take care of the staff and patients.
