Ed Smith, Staff Nurse
An infant came in via ambulance with their mother holding them, clearly in visible distress. The child had to be transported via Air Evac. The entire time, Ed Smith went above and beyond to calmly talk with the mother to help ease some of her anxiety.
When the Air Evac team arrived to transport the patient, he was in communication with the team regarding the patient and in close communication with the on-site pharmacy to ensure the patient received the needed medication(s) promptly before the team was fully ready for transport. What really stood out to me was at the end, when the mother had to say goodbye as they were not able to travel with them, creating more distress for her.
Ed was right there to assist the team with the process of going from bed to helicopter, and immediately afterward consoled the mother, assuring her that her baby was in good hands, which I noticed eased her anxiety. He did an excellent job in an intense situation, especially for someone as a parent.
