Recently we had a situation where an adult patient who sees our pediatric psychologist was experiencing suicidal ideation and drinking alcohol. The patient called our office trying to reach the psychiatrist regarding her situation and thoughts. Unfortunately, the provider was admitting another patient and the time so the nurse stayed on the phone with the patient until we could get the authorities to take the patient to the nearest hospital. The nurse discussed topics to distract the patient such as the patient's dog. The patient was ultimately admitted to the hospital thanks to the patience and sincerity of the nurse who was with her on the phone.
