Tonight, part of Ed's assignment was a gentleman who was quite near the end of his life. I was so impressed with the dignity, compassion, and thoughtfulness he displayed. His care for the family and patient was exceptional. He was understanding and accepting of the family's wishes and met them at the stage of acceptance and grieving they were currently at. One of the things I thought was most thoughtful was playing highland music for this Scotsman while his family went home to rest. He created a relationship with the family quickly and offered to be the one to notify the family of the patient's passing. Upon the family's return, they were so grateful and appreciative of his care. I really felt tonight that he went above and beyond his regular duty. Earlier we were having a conversation about end of life care and he was so thoughtful and specifically concerned about how best to help the family and the patient's transition through the difficult time and decisions. He is always an amazing nurse, but I felt like he should be recognized for the amazing work he did tonight.
