Edward De Jesus, RN, 2-West, was nominated for finding ingenious ways of engaging with both patients and colleagues.

Edward was nominated for multiple reasons, but the first came from a letter our Chief Nursing Officer received from a patient. In the letter, the patient expressed how great an experience she had on 2-West and how compassionate her care team was. She specifically mentioned Edward, saying, “Edward, you are an inspiration to everyone. I pray that you never lose your compassion in this field of work. You are very special, and they are so blessed to have you. Good luck and many blessings to you in the future."

Edward’s team also feels lucky to have him. Recently, 2-West had an extremely challenging patient; many members of the team were scared or uncomfortable caring for the patient. Edward always treated the patient with respect and would go with fellow colleagues not only for safety but to engage with the patient in a positive way. One time he even got the patient to rap and sing!

Lastly, Edward is always coming up with ways to promote safety for the unit. For Halloween, a skeleton named Sally appeared on the unit with captions. For example, one day Sally was donned in an isolation gown next to the isolation room and held a sign that said, “Don’t forget to wash your hands and wear your PPE.”
