I met Mr. Edwin Perez as a Clinical resource nurse in the Emergency Department, and I also had the pleasure to work with him until he transferred as head nurse in Psychiatry Department and then back to the emergency department. That is where I witnessed how he worked and encouraged his staff nurses to take a lead in resolving issues that they may encounter in the area. He is very active in helping staff develop professionally because he does believe that they have the capacity to provide the best care and grow in any learning situation they will encounter. A new unit was recently opened in the department and he did not falter and took on the challenge to fill in anything the unit may need. Staff nurses who had difficulty adjusting to the new area were given enough time to adjust and he motivated them that they could do it and will be able to adapt to the new environment without worries. As a head nurse, he has shown the qualities of a leader who does not just care about statistics, rather showed that he looks at the whole picture to ensure nobody will be left behind.
