Edwin stayed at the side of the patient's son for an additional 45 minutes, validating his feelings and listening as he shared stories about his mother.
Edwin is an exemplary new graduate nurse who goes above and beyond the call of action. During one of his shifts, Edwin had passed off report to the night shift nurse and was preparing to go home. While packing his things, he overheard that the unit was receiving a patient from the ED who was in critical condition and continued to code. Edwin stayed past the scheduled end time of his shift to assist his team members with what would be a difficult admission as the unit was short-staffed that night. After the patient was situated on the unit, she began to code again. Edwin jumped in confidently and willing to help by starting compressions. Unfortunately, the patient was not able to be revived. The patient's son was very upset at the passing of his mother and began to throw things and yell. Edwin went to his side and pulled him into the waiting room. He listened to the patient's son as he described how this was a very stressful situation at the loss of his mother. Edwin stayed at the side of the patient's son for an additional 45 minutes, validating his feelings and listening as he shared stories about his mother. The patient's son expressed how he was so grateful for Edwin and not only his nursing actions in the code, but also in caring for him and allowing him to work through his grief. Edwin is a primary example of how nursing is an act of caring.
