It is not often a Med/Surg unit is lucky enough to hire a new graduate nurse with a history of life and professional experiences. Eileen brings a lot to the table because her life experiences, such as being a mother, have helped to mold her into the caring, compassionate person that she is. In the last few years we have had an increasing number of patients who spend weeks to months here with us who over time become bored and may already be impulsive at baseline. It has been amazing to watch Eileen work so closely with one of our current "resident" patients. The attention she has provided him has not only helped to improve his mood and entertain him, but has also helped to decrease his falls and has helped the rest of the unit to understand him. In a few short months with her working here she has helped to rally our unit into providing him with quick, attentive care. She also went above and beyond by bringing him puzzles and other coloring activities from home to help keep him occupied. Her hard work with this patient has also encouraged her to begin developing a box of items specific for dementia and impulsive patients who may be here long term that long for something to do. Just the other day she said to me, "I have been dreaming about having this job for so long, I am just so thankful and happy to be here". We are thankful and so happy to have Eileen here.
