Eileen has courageously led her teams through trying times such as the Boston Marathon Bombing and the COVID-19 Pandemic but has also celebrated her teams during the good times
In over 20 years at Mass Eye and Ear, Eileen Lowell has worked in a multitude of roles, including Staff Nurse, Clinical Resource Nurse and Preceptor, Clinical Leader, Nurse Manager, Director of Patient Care Services, and finally closing out her career as our Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services. Eileen’s career speaks volumes about her determination, work ethic, and successes, but it’s what is not on her resume that makes her so special.

As her former executive assistant, program manager, and now as a project manager, I have had the luxury of watching a compassionate, supportive, kind, and dedicated leader in action.

For years, I have watched Eileen fiercely advocate for the nursing department at Mass Eye and Ear. I’ve watched Eileen dedicate time and resources towards throwing a week of events every year for Nurses Week that concludes with a reception in the evening honoring the nurses of Mass Eye and Ear. In her time as Chief Nursing Officer, Eileen has awarded nearly 100 Norman Knight Leadership, Clinical Excellence, and Scholarship Awards to our nurses and over 30 DAISY Awards. In fact, Mass Eye and Ear is a partner of the DAISY Foundation thanks to Eileen’s leadership, starting the program at MEE in 2012 and being a constant and loyal supporter of the foundation and its mission since.

Eileen supports and listens and cares, she is the first person to roll her sleeves up when work needs to be done and the last person to accept any credit for it. As she stated at Leadership, she joined Mass Eye and Ear as a family of 4 and is leaving as a family of 10. While Eileen played the role of wife, mom, and Nana, her support and commitment to Mass Eye and Ear and its nurses never wavered. Eileen has courageously led her teams through trying times such as the Boston Marathon Bombing and the COVID-19 Pandemic but has also celebrated her teams during the good times such as Nurses Weeks, national conferences, DAISY celebrations, birthdays, retirements – you name it, and Eileen was always there.

Eileen, who began Mass Eye and Ear’s DAISY Program, has read Patrick’s story and shared his family’s mission many, many times, and is so deserving of this award and recognition. Please join me in congratulating her.
