Eileen has guided me every step of the way of my own small journey of advocacy.
Eileen Weber has been a mentor for me since even before I entered nursing school. I first met her through her work in health care reform in Minnesota back when I was still a pre-nursing student. It was Eileen who taught me about advocacy and important health care issues, it was Eileen who encouraged me to look into nursing instead of medicine (since everyone recommended I go to medical school, of course), and it was Eileen who helped me with my application to nursing school and who celebrated with me when I was accepted.
Given my history with Eileen, I was extremely excited to hear she had been accepted as faculty to the School of Nursing, and to have her as one of my professors for NURS 4705: Nursing Leadership. It was here in this class where Eileen has supported me in my current endeavor: giving a voice to the student body regarding the change in admission policy for the School of Nursing’s Bachelor of Science program. When the Dean came to my leadership course, I brought to her attention how many of the students were feeling regarding the change, and together we worked to create an open forum to facilitate discussion and understanding for the students.
I wholly underestimated just how much work making this open forum a successful event would be. Eileen has guided me every step of the way of my own small journey of advocacy. She helped me set up a structure to what I was planning (and what was I planning?) as well as ideas on how to spread the word and publicize the event. In addition, Eileen was instrumental to making the actual event productive as she helped guide me through key discussion points and create a plan of what to do after the discussion.
I am so thankful for having Eileen in my life, and I am very excited to see her flourish here at the University of Minnesota. When speaking with my classmates and other SON students who have had Eileen as an instructor, we all agree: Eileen is an exceptional addition to the School of Nursing, and she inspires students to become leaders.
