Ekta has taken the time to sit and listen to me and ask questions to completely understand what's going on with my symptoms. She has never rushed, and I can tell she is genuinely listening and cares.
I have had the experience of being in the hospital numerous times in my fairly short years, and I can say beyond a shadow of any doubt Ekta has been a shining star. She started as my nurse yesterday, and I was fortunate to have her again today. When I think of what a nurse is (coming from someone who has no medical knowledge or training) these characteristics come to mind:
Compassionate listener. Ekta has taken the time to sit and listen to me and ask questions to completely understand what's going on with my symptoms. She has never rushed, and I can tell she is genuinely listening and cares.
Gentle. I have been stuck with needles and IVs so many times throughout the years, often hurting to the point I couldn't look. Today I was able to watch Ekta put in an IV without being fearful and it didn't even hurt. I have never watched someone do this to me.
Trustworthy. Ekta has kept every commitment she made to me. Nurses in my opinion have a tougher job than doctors, and often get overlooked when it comes to recognition. I haven't had to ask for anything twice, and her organizational skills have been wonderful as well as keeping me informed.
Patient advocate. This is big. Especially in a time when COVID-19 prevents patients from having our spouses and family with them advocating for the best care. I told my wife this morning that Ekta has truly been my advocate since being here. She has gone to the doctors respectfully requesting medicine and explaining my symptoms. She also pushed for dietary changes as well so that I could actually swallow the food I was being given.
I wanted to make sure Ekta was recognized. I have felt not alone due to having her as my nurse. This is something that is so much appreciated. I cannot remember the names and faces of past nurses, but Ekta will always be an example of what a true nurse is in my mind and memory. My wife has a first cousin who is studying to be a nurse, and I'm going to be sure and pass this experience to her as a "training in patient care."
